VOCs are gases that are emitted from some liquids and solid materials. VOCs are found in many varieties of chemicals which may have long-term health effects and some acute health effects. Indoor concentrations of VOCs are usually higher than outdoor by five times. There are thousands of products that are used in and around the home or business that emit VOCs.
Where do VOCs come from?
Many products that homes and businesses use contain VOCs. Things such as makeup cleaning products, especially paints, strippers and varnishes. All fuels have a high amount of VOCs and using or storing any of these products can release some volatile organic compounds. Ventilation is key. Generally, homes businesses have a multiple levels higher amount of VOCs than outdoor air. Even heavily polluted outdoor air.
Are VOCs dangerous?
VOCs can be dangerous, especially for the elderly children and people with certain health conditions. Exposure to VOCs in the environment can cause a host of problems including irritated eyes, nose and throat. VOCs can cause headaches and nausea. Damage to liver, kidneys and other systems in the body can occur with prolonged or heavy exposure also. VOCs are known to cause cancer with continued or high levels of exposure. VOCs can affect the eyes, the nose and throat and the skin as well as causing nausea, fatigue and dizziness. VOCs are dangerous substances. That should be limited if possible.
How can I protect myself?
Monitoring the level of VOC in your environment is an option. You can purchase a monitoring device that will constantly test your air quality. Many paints and other cleaning chemicals are listed as low VOC.
